Río Cruces Nature Sanctuary, Valdivian Rainforest and Coast

This will be a highlight in your trip. Specially designed for birdwatchers and companies which offer birding tours in Chile, our local itinerary provides the best opportunity to see most of the wetland, prairie and forest bird species of Central-South Chile.

Day 1.

During this day we’ll have the opportunity to see some of the most representative species of this RAMSAR site such as the Black-necked Swan, Great Grebe, Snowy-crowned Tern, White-necked Heron, Red-gartered, Red-fronted and White-winged Coots. We’ll see reproductive colonies of Olivaceous Cormorants, Black-faced Ibis and several egret species

Day 2.

After an early breakfast, we’ll explore different habitats present on Santa María farm. During this morning we expect to see a wide range of wetland, prairie and forest birds and several endemics, including Slender-billed parakeet, Chilean Tinamou and Chilean Mockingbird. In the native forest patches we will have the opportunity to see most of the Tapaculos inhabiting in the Region: Black-throated Huet-huet, Andean and Ochre-flanked Tapaculos plus other species like the tiny Des Murs` Wiretail, Austral Parakeet, Chilean Pigeon and White-throated Treerunner.

On open areas we have a good chance of watching the Correndera Pipit, Black-chinned Siskin, Long-tailed Meadowlark and the Grassland Yellow-Finch. Near the shoreline and wetland areas were we should be able to watch the Many-colored Rush-Tyrant, the Wren-like Rushbird and the Yellow-winged Blackbird. During the afternoon we take our boat to some affluent rivers, where we should be able to see mixed flocks of several ducks species like the Chiloe Wigeon, Speckled Teal, Yellow-billed Pintail and the scarce Spectacled Duck.

Day 3.

Today we will drive to the coast. Crossing the Cordillera de la Costa we’ll visit a coastal forest where we have a good chance to watch species such us Patagonian Tyrant, Chucao Tapaculo, Patagonian Sierra-Finch, Blue and White Swallow. Descending to the coast we search for the rare Rufous-tailed Hawk. Among the many birds we hope to see from the coast are; Red-legged Cormorant, Blackish and American Oystercatcher, Whimbrel, Sanderling and other birds that live near the coast such as the Rufous-backed Negrito, Dark-bellied Cinclodes, Cinnamon Teal, Black-necked Stilt, Lesser and Greater Yellowlegs and Turkey vultur.
