Day-trip for cruise passengers
For those birders arriving to Valparaiso on a cruise and which plan to stay on land for one or a couple of days, we have designed special single-day birding trips. Depending on your time availability, we can offer you the following alternatives:
• 6-hour trip
On a 6-hour trip we travel along the coast in search of the endemic Chilean Seaside Cinclodes. There are also impressive seabird rookeries with large flocks of Red-legged Cormorants, Inca Terns, Grey Gulls, Peruvian Boobies, Peruvian Pelicans and Guanay Cormorants. There are also large aggregations of Southern Sea Lions in this area. We will also visit wetlands which are the home to the Collared Plover, Blackish Oystercatcher, White-backed Stilt, Speckled Duck, Chiloe Wigeon, Red Shoveler, Many-colored Rush-tyrant, Wren-like Rushbird, and three South American grebes (Great, White-tufted and Silvery).
• 12-hour trip
With more time on your schedule we will provide a 12-hour trip to visit La Campana National Park in the interior valleys of the Coastal Mountain Range. This site concentrates some of the most typical Central-Chile Mediterranean landscapes. Here we expect to see six endemics: Dusky-tailed Canastero, White-throated and Dusky Tapaculos, Moustached Turca, Chilean Mockingbird and Chilean Tinamou. We have a good chance to observe the Giant Hummingbird, Scale-throated Earthcreeper, White-throated Treerunner, Thorn-tailed Rayadito, Plain-mantled Tit-spinetail, Striped Woodpecker, Chilean Flicker, Picui Ground-dove and Chilean Pigeon. This is also a good place for watching raptors such as Variable Hawk, Harris’s Hawk, and Black-chested Buzzard-eagle.
