Scrub and forest birds in the Coastal Mountain Range (1-2 days)
This trip concentrates most of Chile’s continental endemic bird species. We will visit typical Central-Chile Mediterranean landscapes at the La Campana National Park, which was declared Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. This area is dominated by scrubby vegetation and extensive sclerophyllous forests and impressive Chilean Palm woods. Here we expect to find six endemics: Dusky-tailed Canastero, White-throated and Dusky Tapaculos, Moustached Turca, Chilean Mockingbird and Chilean Tinamou. We have a good chance to observe the Giant Hummingbird, Scale-throated Earthcreeper, White-throated Treerunner, Thorn-tailed Rayadito, Plain-mantled Tit-spinetail, Striped Woodpecker, Chilean Flicker, Picui Ground-dove and Chilean Pigeon. This is also a good place for watching raptors such as Variable Hawk, Harris’s Hawk, and Black-chested Buzzard-eagle. At dusk we may see Magellanic Horned Owls.
