Birds of the Lake District. From the cordilleran lakes and volcanoes to the Chiloe Island

The Lake District is known for its impressive snow-capped volcanoes, lakes, rivers and spectacular rain forests. Our trip offers the opportunity to see some of the most beautiful landscapes on the region and searching for many interesting bird species, some endemics to southern South America, including Magellanic Woodpecker, Slender-billed parakeet, Chilean Tinamou and Rufous-legged Owl.

Days 1 + 2. Temuco - Conguillio National Park

Our trip begins in Temuco. We’ll visit the magnificent Conguillio National Park in search for the scarce and amazing Magellanic Woodpecker, Andean Condor, Black-throated Huet-huet and Austral Parakeet plus other species such us Striped Woodpecker, Chilean Pigeon and Thorn-tailed Rayadito. Among centenary monkey-puzzle trees, volcanoes, lakes and open areas we should see the beautiful Long-tailed Meadowlark, Andean Gull, Flying Steamer Duck, Spectacled Duck, Austral Pygmy Owl, Bar-winged Cinclodes, White-browed Ground-tyrant, Chilean Flicker and Black-chested Buzzard-Eagle.

Days 3 + 4. Río Cruces Nature Sanctuary – Santa María

We’ll have two days to explore the different habitats and biodiversity of this protected wetland area. During the boat trip we’ll have good chance to see breeding colonies of many species, such us Snowy-crowned Tern, White-faced Ibis, Brown-hooded Gull, Olivaceous Cormorant and White-necked Heron. The beautiful Black-necked Swan, Great Grebe, Wren-like Rushbird, Many-colored Rush-Tyrant, White-throated Treerunner, Rufous-tailed Plantcutter, Spectacled Tyrant, the endemics Slender-billed Parakeet, and Chilean Tinamou are among the range of interesting birds that occur at the Río Cruces Nature Sanctuary and Santa María.

Day 5. Puyehue National Park

We’ll spend the day at this superb National Park where we’ll try to find the Patagonian Tyrant, Des Murs’ Wiretail and Green-backed Firecrown. We’ll have another opportunity to see the Magellanic Woodpecker. Dominated by impressive Nothofagus forests and cordilleran rivers, Puyehue offers the chance to see different species of Tapaculos such us Chucao, Ochre-flanked and Andean Tapaculos, the migratory White-crested Elaenia, Black-faced Ibis and the remarkable Torrent Duck.

Day 6 + 7. Chiloe Island

These days we will enjoy the beautiful Pacific Coast of Chiloe Island, searching for wintering flocks of Sanderlings, Red-knots and Hudsonian Godwits. We should also find the beautiful Ringed Kingfisher, Silvery Grebe and Southern Caracara. We will visit a mixed colony of Magellanic and Humboldt Penguins and search for a representative sample of coastal and seabirds, such as Red-legged, Imperial and Rock Cormorants, American and Blackish Oystercatchers, Kelp Goose and the Flightless Steamer-duck.

Day 8. Puerto Montt.

End of the trip.
